Residential Tenancies (Prohibiting Letting Fees) Amendment Bill

This bill will prohibit the charging of a letting fees to tenants and is reported to be passed before Christmas and take effect three months later.

It is still at select committee with their report back to Parliament due by 5 October 2018 so if it is to be passed by Christmas we can expect it under urgency it seems.

Most Property Management companies charge 1 weeks rent as a non-refundable letting fee, though we have never done so. The intention is to outlaw this and have costs passed on to landlords.

This will probably lead to a shake up in the industry and changing fee structures
